Home Sweet Home: Meghan Ryan Nemzer returns to Maryland

Nemzer is from Crofton, Maryland, which is only a half hour drive from College Park. She spent 18 years in Piscataway, New Jersey as a player before becoming Director of Operations, Assistant Coach and Associate Head Coach for the Scarlet Knights.

When she stepped onto the podium above the soccer field, she did so in front of her family, which included her parents, her husband, Joe Nemzer – who will be on the team’s staff. The only person who was more popular than Meghan was her precious 14 month old daughter Bethany.

It wasn’t just the media and the Ryan and Nemzer families in attendance. Head coaches from across the University of Maryland made the trip to support their new peer, including head football coach Michael Locksley and the most successful coach in school history, the Field hockey coach Missy Meharg as well as baseball coach Rob Vaughn and female golf coach Kelly Hovland.

The support given to Nemzer by his new colleagues was immense but not surprising. At some point in their careers, each of them was the new neighborhood coach, eager to start and make their mark in the school.

It was this welcoming attitude, this sense of family and the encapsulation of what the “One Maryland” tagline really means to those in the sports department that meant the world to Nemzer.

“When [Maryland] called, I said it was supposed to be something special for me to leave. What you have here in Maryland is something special. I talked about the people, and the first minute I walked onto campus. I felt so comfortable. Everyone walked in and greeted me, and that’s what you get [at Maryland]. It’s amazing how many people are showing up today.
