Jack Hughes named second NHL star of the week

Jack Hughes shines in the Devils and at the league level in Week 11.

After 10 days off, the New Jersey Devils returned to action on Dec. 29 to start a three-game week.

Week 11 was going to be huge for the Devils as they would return to the ice in a bid to end their appalling six-game losing streak and turn things around before it’s too late.

The Devils kicked off with a win over the unimpressive Buffalo Sabers to end their losing streak. Head coach Lindy Ruff then tested positive for COVID-19 hours before the team’s next game against the Edmonton Oilers.

The Devils continued their fantastic game against one of hockey’s best offensives and then against a top-three team in the Washington Capitals League.

Alain Nasreddine took over behind the bench during those two games and made the Devils a whole different team, adding to the argument that Ruff’s New Jersey time will soon be over.

Nasreddine did a fabulous job, but which players deserve the most credit for this turn of events?

Player of the week: C Jack Hughes

@ BUF: 1G, 2A
with respect to EDM: 2 G, 1 A
@ WSH: 2 A
Average game score: 2.82
Average defensive impact: 0.25

It’s been another amazing week for the Devils star center, who has been quite impressive since returning from injury. Hughes has scored three impressive goals and eight points in three games this week.

He opened the scoring against Edmonton and ended the game by winning the game for his team in overtime.

Hughes was among the Devils’ top five players in every game, including the team’s best against Buffalo. He did it defensively as well and continues to improve in that regard.

Hughes’ best week of the season has been nationally recognized. He was named the second star of the week in the NHL for his exceptional play.

Hughes is emerging as a real star and if the Devils hope to change the season, they’ll need their best player to keep the pace going.

Honorable Mention # 1: LW Yegor Sharangovich

@ BUF: 1G, 1A
vs EDM: 1 G
@ WSH: 1G
Average Game Score: 2.32
Average defensive impact: 0.23

We talked about how the Devils maybe found something awesome with the Sharangovich-Hughes-Bratt line. This week was further proof.

Sharangovich is once again the dangerous scorer we saw last year in his rookie season. He’s been in the team’s top four twice this week and is now on a four-game streak with at least one point and has scored one goal in three straight.

Sharangovich gave the team an exhilarating moment to celebrate when he tied the game against Edmonton with 30 seconds left.

Sharangovich got off to a very slow start was one of the reasons the Devils are in this unfortunate position, so seeing him finally start is encouraging.

Honorable mention # 2: RHD PK Subban

@ BUF: 1 A
@ WSH: 1 A
Average game score: 1.90
Average defensive impact: 0.27

Subban came back with another really strong week.

He was the team’s best defenseman by far and an incredible game against the Sabers is one of the main reasons he was selected. Subban was phenomenal in both zones, posting a season-high 4.47.

Subban has played a lot better over the past month and I hope he can maintain some consistency playing at this level as the season progresses.
